Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead or All Souls’ Day is celebrated on November 2nd, in Mexico. New Mexico and several other countries. Ah ha, almost got ya there, as New Mexico is a state not a country. Never the less, they celebrate it there.
The belief is, communication exists between the living and the dead. Differing from the Roman Catholic ritual to commemorate All Souls’ Day, the custom established by pre-colonial Mexican civilizations became a ceremony where indigenous beliefs blended with Catholic beliefs. Therefore, the Day of the Dead is not a mournful celebration, but a happy and colorful one where death takes a friendly, and party like atmosphere.
Having spent a lot of time in Mexico, as well as New Mexico, I am fascinated with the creativity that accompanies the Day of the Dead celebration. Since it is just around the corner I thought I would share some fun examples of Day of the Dead folk art, one of the many wonderful things that inspire me.

Headin’ to Santa Fe

After watching the updates on wildfires in the Santa Fe, NM area, we have decided to continue with plans to head that way.
I am hauling 2 horses with their stuff, my stuff, and a French art easel. The plan is to paint, paint, paint, and ride horses – much easier there in NM than here in Texas as it’s cooler!
I will post an occasional update to this blog, but for the full adventure become a fan of my Facebook site, www.facebook.com/tamararymer. It will be easier for me to upload all the photos that way, since I will be working off an IPad. It all starts in 2 days so keep checking back!

A Skull Found While Trail Riding

This is a little something picked up from this mornings trail ride. I remember watching an interview with Georgia O’Keeffe from years ago. She said when she took walks, she picked up skulls and bones when she couldn’t find any flowers to pick.

Watercolor Papers Updated-

To pick up where I left off on “Rethinking Watercolor Papers,” I have tried one that is cooperating! Lanaquraelle watercolor paper 300 lb hot press is great. It has a nice smooth feel and seems to have minimal freckling-oops, speckling. Don’t get me wrong, there still is some. There’s also some streaking, but I can work with that. I like the drag…the way the paintbrush moves across the paper surface.

I have met some watercolor artists that, believe it or not, don’t get as involved with their paper as yours truly. I take it seriously. When I see colors in my head and want to make sure I transfer that image to the paper, the paper needs to hold up it’s end of the bargain.

I will probably be putting more to the test, but like what I see so far. I’ll post a painting in the future done on this paper, and will make sure to let you folks know.
